Dear Gaston,

I was deeply saddened when I heard earlier this year that neo-Nazi Glenn Miller was arrested for killing three people at Jewish sites in Kansas during an anti-Semitic rampage.

My heart ached for the victims and their families. But I wasn’t surprised by Miller’s violence.

You see, Miller and his followers plotted to kill me and blow up our building after our lawsuit shut down his heavily armed paramilitary Klan group.

Miller’s now in jail, but the reality is there are thousands of other Millers out there — people who want to harm us. We just never know when one of them will pick up a gun.

That’s why I’m writing you today. Because our work puts us in the crosshairs of hate, it’s absolutely necessary that we maintain 24-hour security. During a recent protest outside our building, for example, armed white supremacists were stopped in the crowd.

Please make a generous contribution to our annual security fund. It will go a long way toward the cost of keeping my colleagues and me safe.

It’s no secret why we’re targeted by hatemongers — they want to stop our work any way they can.

With your help, we’ve crushed numerous hate groups by winning large jury verdicts on behalf of their victims — groups like the United Klans, the neo-Nazi White Aryan Resistance and the Imperial Klans.

As you may recall, we’ve been attacked before. Our first office was firebombed by Klansmen.

Given the history of threats against us, I have to make sure we take every feasible security precaution to protect the SPLC. I hope you can help by sending a generous special gift.

Thank you for standing shoulder-to-shoulder with us. Please be a voice of reason in your community — and speak out against hate whenever and wherever you see it.

Thank you for helping us do our work in safety.

Sincerely,

Morris Dees
